Whether you are hosting a small family Thanksgiving celebration, attending a “Friendsgiving” or packing your bags to visit with family over the holiday, two things are certain: You’re going to be eating a big meal, and it’s a special occasion so a festive outfit is in order. No need for formal wear, just a step up from your every day look.

I host a large group of friends and family every year, and some years it is hot and sultry in California, and some years it is down right chilly enough to light a fire in the fireplace! Because I’m usually in the kitchen moving around a lot, I like to dress comfortably but with a little fancy flair.

I don’t know about you, but the older I get the more uncomfortable my clothes feel when I eat a big meal! I want to be able to enjoy this lovely meal and not feel like I can’t breathe unless something bursts open. So I carefully select an outfit that allows for this sudden growth spurt! Lucky for us there are plenty of chic, loose-fitting clothes that still look holiday-appropriate.

Here are a few suggestions:
  • On the bottom, wear leggings, stretchy jersey pants, a maxi skirt, dark wash jeggings, elastic waistband.
  • On top, wear a loose-fitting tunic in your best color, a long v-neck, or off-shoulder, sweater with a colorful scarf, a loose and long silk blouse with a beautiful necklace.
  • If it’s chilly, add a tailored blazer, a velvet jacket, cashmere cardigan, poncho or wrap.
  • Funky options: a loose-fitting jumpsuit, a maxi dress with long-sleeve top underneath, sparkly sweater over skinny jeans and boots.
I’ve compiled some Thanksgiving looks that are both chic and comfy, regardless of whether you’re a host or a guest:

(Above) Complementary color combinations are sure to make a bold impression. This outfit is casually chic with a tie-neck, loose fitting blouse paired with blue skinny, stretchy pants, tartan poncho cape, blue flats and a gold choker.

Thanksgiving Jumpsuits(Above) Jumpsuits, I am convinced, are the closest thing to wearing pajamas with the surprise effect of being tres chic! You can find jumpsuits to match your body type and budget. Wear flats, booties, or slip-on mules. The only caution is to drink minimally so you limit the number of bathroom visits!

Thanksgiving Dresses & Boots(Above) A Trina Turk bright orange loose dress, Diane Von Furstenberg wrap dress, or a stretchy v-neck sweater dress in a beautiful color is both comfortable and striking. Finish the outfit with tights (if it’s chilly), a pair of comfortable tall boots, colorful scarf and accessories.

Thanksgiving Sweaters(Above) The simplest outfits are often the most elegant. A sweater and pants will bring you no-fuss warmth and comfort. You can choose a sweater that reflects your signature style, from the clean lines and boxy fit of a black and white grid, a soft cashmere blush pink, to a chic Valentino cashmere wool with satin tie belt sweater. Pair with black stretch jersey leggings, a pair of comfy flats, and you’re good for a relaxing day of food. football, family, friends, and fun!
